Blue Claw Associates' landscape construction division builds investment-grade outdoor living spaces on the Cape, the Islands, and the South Shore. Every project is approached as an integrated build — site grading, drainage engineering, hardscape, planting, irrigation, and lighting — coordinated by a single project manager and executed by the same crew from groundbreaking to final walkthrough.

We take a small number of construction projects each year so the work gets the attention it requires. Most of our clients have been referred by an architect, a landscape designer, or a previous client whose property we've maintained for years. The constant: properties where the standard of finish has to be high enough that the work disappears into the architecture.

Our typical landscape construction project is in the $75,000 to $400,000 range, with a minimum project size of $50,000. We don't take small repair jobs. We don't subcontract the masonry. The crew that grades the site is the crew that sets the bluestone, and the foreman who runs the build is on the property every day until handoff.

What's included

Scope of work.

Bluestone patios and terraces

Hand-set bluestone in thermal, natural cleft, or honed finishes — frost-protected base, drainage everywhere it matters, hidden expansion joints engineered for the freeze-thaw cycle.

Fieldstone walls and steps

Hand-set wet or dry-laid stone walls in heights from 18 inches to 8 feet. Engineered with hidden geogrid where required. Built to outlast the homeowner.

Drainage and grading

Every site we build gets a drainage plan first. French drains, dry wells, swales, and storm-water dispersion beds. Properties stay dry.

Planting

Plant material sourced from local nurseries proven on Cape and South Shore sites. Plant lists drawn against the property's microclimate and soil profile.

Outdoor lighting

Low-voltage path lights, accent lights on specimen plants, and architectural up-lights on the home. Wired to a single transformer with a smart timer.

Outdoor kitchens, fire pits, fireplaces

Stone-veneer fireplaces, masonry grills, fire pits, and full outdoor kitchens — all stone, no faux materials.

Process

From first call to handoff.

Every landscape construction project starts with a site visit, usually within a week of first contact. Ian or one of our senior project managers walks the property, listens, and asks questions before proposing anything.

Within 10 business days we deliver an itemized proposal — a plant list, a materials list, drainage notes, a project timeline, and a fixed price. There are no surprises later. If the scope changes during the build (which is rare), every change order is documented in writing before any work proceeds.

Construction starts on a scheduled date and runs to a published timeline. The project manager files daily site updates with the homeowner. Weekly check-ins are scheduled. The same crew is on the property every day.

At handoff, we walk the property with the homeowner, hand over a maintenance binder for every plant and material on site, and discuss whether the property fits our weekly maintenance program.

Frequently asked

Questions we get often.

What's the minimum project size for landscape construction?

Most of our landscape construction projects start at $50,000. We focus on full-property builds rather than small repair jobs — that's where our integrated approach (site grading, drainage, hardscape, planting, lighting all coordinated together) actually pays off.

Do you subcontract the masonry?

No. Our masons are Blue Claw employees and they're on every job we build. The crew that grades the site is the crew that sets the bluestone.

How long does a typical landscape construction project take?

From signed contract to handoff, most of our projects run 4 to 12 weeks depending on scope, materials lead time, and site complexity. We publish a timeline at the start and report against it weekly.

What towns do you build in?

Our service area covers Cape Cod (Sandwich through Wellfleet), Nantucket, the Massachusetts South Shore (Cohasset through Duxbury), and parts of the Southcoast. See our full service area list.

Do you offer maintenance after construction?

Yes. Most properties we build stay on a weekly maintenance program with the same crew that built them. Programs are 100% electric and cover lawn, plant health, irrigation oversight, seasonal cleanups, and pruning. Learn more about estate maintenance.

Can you work with my landscape architect or designer?

Yes — a meaningful portion of our work is collaboration with architects, landscape designers, and design-build firms. We interpret drawings, source materials, and deliver a seamless finish without being asked twice.

Do you handle permitting?

We handle most local permits in the towns we serve regularly. For Conservation Commission filings on coastal or wetland-adjacent sites, we coordinate with the homeowner's wetlands consultant or engineer.
