An outdoor kitchen or fire pit works best when it is planned with the patio around it: where the smoke drifts, how far it is from the back door, where the gas and electric lines run, and how guests move between cooking, dining and the pool. We build these features as part of the hardscape, so the stone, the base and the utilities go in together.

Everything we build is natural stone. No faux stone panels and no pre-cast kits on visible work.

What's included

What we build.

Fire pits

Gas or wood-burning fire pits in fieldstone, veneer or granite, sized to the seating around them.

Outdoor fireplaces

Stone-veneer fireplaces with proper flues, frost-protected footings and weather-rated mortar.

Masonry grills and pizza ovens

Built-in masonry grill enclosures and oven surrounds.

Seat walls

Stone seat walls around the fire pit or dining area, capped in bluestone or granite.

Lighting

Low-voltage lighting for cooking surfaces, steps and seating so the space works after dark.

How we build it

Stone, utilities and the pool.

Stone choices. Kitchen and fire pit bases are typically fieldstone or natural stone veneer over a concrete block core, with countertops and caps in thermal bluestone or granite. We match the stone to your patio, walls and house.

Gas and electric. Gas lines are installed by a licensed gas fitter and electric by a licensed electrician. We coordinate the trenching and sleeve locations so the lines go in before the base and the stone, not after.

Footings and base. Kitchens, fireplaces and fire pits are heavy. They sit on frost-protected footings or a reinforced slab so they don't heave or crack the patio around them.

Pairing with a pool. Many of our outdoor kitchens sit beside a pool. We build the stone around the pool, and our sister company Blue Water Pools & Spas builds custom gunite pools, so the pool, the deck and the kitchen can be planned as one project. See pool surrounds.

Frequently asked

Questions we get often.

Gas or wood-burning fire pit?

Gas is cleaner, instant and easier for frequent use. Wood gives a bigger fire and the smell people associate with a fire pit. Check your town's rules on open burning before choosing wood. We can build either.

Do you install the gas line?

Gas lines are installed by a licensed gas fitter. We coordinate the trenching and sleeve locations with them so the line is in before the stone goes down.

What countertop holds up best outdoors?

Thermal bluestone and granite both hold up well outdoors. Granite is the more stain-resistant choice for heavy cooking. We help you choose at the site visit.

Can you add an outdoor kitchen to an existing patio?

Often, yes, if the patio base can carry the load and the utilities can be brought in. In some cases we rebuild part of the patio to add a proper footing.
