Why Blue Claw in Cohasset

A local crew, a long-view standard.

Cohasset is salt and granite. Every project we build here has to perform under nor'easter spray, oak-leaf litter, and a freeze-thaw cycle that punishes anything mortared too rigid. We spec frost-rated bases under every patio, choose plant species proven on exposed coastal lots, and hand-set stone the way it survives — heavy face out, batter into the slope, drainage everywhere it matters.

Jerusalem Road and the Cohasset Common district set our standard for restraint. These are properties where the landscape disappears into the architecture — boxwood hedges aligned to window centers, bluestone treads cut to match the original 1880s field-stone walks, lighting hidden in beds so the house glows, not the fixtures. Closer to Sandy Beach we work on more contemporary builds with infinity pools and minimalist stone-coped surrounds.

Pool surround construction is a major Cohasset specialty for us — we've installed several bluestone-coped pools where the pool deck transitions cleanly into a back-yard lawn or a coastal meadow. Drainage is non-negotiable on these sites, and we engineer the pool surround the same way we engineer a retaining wall: frost-protected base, permeable joints where appropriate, and a plant palette that handles salt drift.

On a Cohasset waterfront build we hand-cut bluestone treads to follow the natural grade down to the seawall — twelve risers, no two the same — so the path looked like it had been worn into the slope rather than laid on top of it. The mason who set the steps drew them out on graph paper before he ever lifted a stone.
