Why Blue Claw in Chatham

A local crew, a long-view standard.

Chatham is one of the Cape's most recognizable landscape markets, and the standards here are exacting. We work all over town — Old Village, Stage Harbor, Riverview, the Pleasant Bay-facing properties off Strong Island Road — and on each site the brief is the same: stonework that reads as native to the elbow of the Cape, plantings that handle salt and wind, and craft that holds up under the close attention of long-tenured Chatham residents.

Chatham's design culture is conservative in the best sense — restrained palettes, locally appropriate materials, low fences, careful preservation of view corridors. Our Chatham projects almost always start with a slow walk-through and a discussion of what the property already does well. We add stonework, drainage, and plant material that elevate what's there rather than replacing it.

Common Chatham asks: bluestone terraces on Pleasant Bay and Oyster Pond properties; cobblestone and granite driveway aprons in the Old Village; perimeter fieldstone walls on Stage Harbor estates; pool surrounds in thermal bluestone; and weekly maintenance programs that include irrigation oversight, horticultural care, lawn care, and seasonal cleanups.

On a Stage Harbor property we hand-cut bluestone treads to step the grade from the back terrace down to a private dock — eighteen risers, each tread cut to match the natural ledge it sat on. The owner walks the path barefoot from the house to the boat in summer. That was the brief, and that's what we built.
