A backyard terraced into three lawn levels by smooth retaining walls with block steps, a fieldstone wall at the top, and rose and lavender plantings
The project

What we built on Cape Cod.

A slope that was hard to use became three flat, usable lawn terraces. Smooth, clean-lined retaining walls hold each level, with solid block steps set into the walls to move between them.

The top terrace is backed by a fieldstone wall and an evergreen screen for privacy. The planting beds that run down the side of the terraces mix roses, lavender, catmint and ornamental grasses, with low-voltage path lights along the edge.
