Bluestone steps set between curved drystack stone retaining walls, with river-rock drainage at the base
The project

What we built on Cape Cod.

A grade change between a lawn and the lower yard, solved with a flight of bluestone steps set between curved drystack stone walls. The walls are laid without mortar, so they drain freely and move with the ground through the winter.

At the base, a bed of river stone collects and spreads runoff from the slope, and low-voltage path lights at the top of the steps light the way at night.
